ourstory

After almost twenty years in the education field, I began to think about a retirement that would bring less stress, be relaxing and bring in some kind of income.

My husband, Bob, grew up on a dairy farm, where he gained lots of animal husbandry and crop production knowledge. I, on the other hand, grew up in the city and never owned an animal larger than a dog. While helping out on his parent's farm, I learned how to feed, clean and even milk the dairy herd! However, when the dairy cows were sold, the focus of the farm changed to growing hay, raising Hereford beef cattle and logging. We wanted to continue livestock farming on some level, but we both worked full time and we needed to find an animal that did not require quite as much of a daily time commitment as the dairy cows did. Quite by chance, at a large agricultural fair in our area, we stumbled upon the perfect animal to raise on our farm...Alpacas!

Lots of research, educational seminars and farm visits followed. New pastures were made and a small barn (which we have nearly outgrown) was constructed. Our carefully chosen foundation females were brought home in July 2002. We were in the alpaca business!

Our farm name, Serene Pastures Alpacas, was chosen for the incredible peacefulness I experience whenever I am around our alpacas. It is a feeling that is difficult to describe. All I can say is that there is nothing more serene than simply watching these graceful animals grazing in your pastures, pronking in your fields, or humming to each other. Alpacas nourish my soul in a very spiritual way. Sharing my life with alpacas is delightful. These gentle, curious and very unique animals have truly changed our lives. My husband, the Yankee farmer, has been transformed! He has his special girls, and to see them interact toghther is heartwarming. We invite you to come spend time on our farm, surrounded by our many friendly, huggable alpacas while listening to the calm humming sound that is the voice if the alpaca. Come touch their wonderfully soft, luxurious fleece or simply hug the alpaca of your choice. Come share in the farming lifestyle we have chosen to live. There's a whole lotta humming going on!
